While it's perfectly fine to use a pre-packaged salad mix, choose one that features romaine or leaf lettuce or other types of healthy greens. Avoid iceberg lettuce, as it is lower in vitamins. Add a few other vegetables to the mix. Ideal choices include onion slices, bell pepper and tomato.

Once you have prepared your salad mix, you can add a bit of protein to the meal like brown ground beef and add it to your Doritos taco salad recipe. You can even mix the beef with a can of black beans. A bit of cheese is also a delicious addition that will boost the protein content of the dish.

Also, select a dressing at this time. You can use almost anything you have on hand. Some common choices include ranch, Catalina, thousand island dressing and western dressing.
